Legacy lawsuit compromise sent to governor’s desk

One of the most acrimonious issues facing Louisiana lawmakers this session has wrapped up.

I love this quote from the Times-Picayune. The “most acrimonious” issue facing our government?  (acrimonious=bitter or anger) The T-P barely covered the issue for it being so insightful of anger among legislators this session!  What a make-up sex comment. Continue reading

MAGINNIS: Jindal Slick with His Oil Politics

John Maginnis shares this great piece about our “Slick” Governor Bobby Jindal and motivations behind his thirst for a GOP Vice-Presidential nomination.  Governor Jindal has been forced to “flip-flop” on BIG OIL; he ‘flipped’ on the BP oil disaster, now he has ‘flopped’ on protecting the citizens of Louisiana. Continue reading

Since Louisiana Won’t Protect It’s Residents from Hazardous Chemical Spills, Maybe Feds Will

Louisiana is a state of contradiction. On one had it’s the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” on the other the landscape here is also dotted with a higher concentration of oil facilities and chemical plants than just about anywhere in the world. And so it’s a thin line between paradise and environmental disaster — as the world learned with the Deepwater Horizon fiasco offshore. But the sad reality is that residents on land often face danger on a routine basis from less publicized spills and leaks of hazardous substances from this cluster of chemical factories. Continue reading

Jindals Legacy Compromise as bad as his education reform

Governor Jindal’s most recent attempt at political heroics in his bid to become Vice-President comes at the expense of landowners in Louisiana who have continually sustained damages from environmental clean-up due to oil exploration and production activities.  Jindal’s compromise seeks to accelerate the clean-up process, supported by Big Oil because it limits liability for long term damages sustained by landowners. Legacy Lawsuit Legislation: ‘Dark Legacy’

The IND (www.TheIND.com) did a great piece summarizing the Legacy Lawsuit issue in the Louisiana legislature, and the struggles against Big Oil to stop the measure….

By Jeremy Alford – The last few years have seen state Sen. Robert Adley, R-Benton, introduce one measure after another to smother the flames created by so-called legacy lawsuits in Louisiana. Legacy lawsuits arise from old — sometimes decades-old — contamination of land by oil and gas drillers. The litigation gets its name because subsequent drillers on contaminated lands “inherit” the liability created by previous, often defunct companies. Continue reading

Farm Bureau Backs Landowner Cleanup Bill

PRESS RELEASE from Farm Bureau…

The state’s largest farm organization is backing a bill in the Louisiana Legislature that would allow both landowners and the oil and gas industry to mediate cleanup issues created by years of drilling on private lands. Continue reading

LEGISLATIVE ALERT: HB 618 endangers all LA water, on House Floor TODAY

HB 618 could devastate all water sources in Louisiana- threatening our coast, agriculture, and drinking water.

The first is an inquiry from the Farm Bureau to the Commissioner of Conservation asking if HB 618, by Rep. Abramson, would give the Commissioner authority to grant exceptions to DNR remediation standards, specifically with respect to “salt parameter standards to environmental media (soils, groundwater, surface water).”

The response is clear: Yes.

The bill in its current form would allow the Commissioner the authority to approve of remediation plans that don’t meet the state standard. This is a dangerous proposition.

Tens of thousands in donations went to select lawmakers leading the legacy lawsuit issue

Re-post from thepoliticaldesk.com – Last week, we detailed all of the contributions Gov. Bobby Jindal has received from trial lawyers, landowners and others who are involved with one side of the legacy litigation issue.

This week, we’re providing details on the other side. Specifically, how five of the lawmakers leading the legacy debate collected more than $43,000 in contributions in 2011 alone from the oil and gas industry and other related parties. Continue reading
